If you want to easily share external contacts (such as contractors, consultants and vendors) with your Google Apps domain staff then using the Global Domain Directory is the best approach BUT there is no easy way to do it.... until now.
Forget about getting your own developer to create you an app, we have built one that you and your staff can use within your Google Apps for Work domain and it's as simple as a spreadsheet..... OK it is a spreadsheet but this is a really cool one!
Its true. Google doesn't offer any way to add, edit or remove any contacts in your domain directory except through the Developer API. There are a few great services that offer this as an additional feature but you may not want to use (or pay) for their entire product. So we created a nifty script which uses a Google Sheet to allow the easy addition, edit or deletion of external contacts to your domain directory for all your staff to access and use.
The sheet is available from our Collections page and we provide full support documentation on our wiki such as setup and getting started guides.
To use this integration you or your domain administrator needs enable the directory sharing from your Google Apps admin panel which the instructions are found on our wiki.
Using the sheet is pretty simple, just click on the Domain Directory Sync drop down menu and select "Get Contacts", this is required before each new addition, update or deletion as the API can't be used to edit the contacts directly. Then when the sheet is populated make your changes and select the operator for each one that is suitable for what you want to do (ADD/UPDATE/DELETE). Then select the Apply Changes from the drop down menu and your down. Google does state that the changes can take up to 24hrs to be seen so don't panic if they don't show up immediately!
